European Countries Will Jointly Build A 450-kilometer Hydrogen Pipeline, Which Is Scheduled to be Completed in 2023

French President Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, Portuguese Prime Minister Costa and European Commission President von der Leyen jointly attended the Euro-Mediterranean Summit held in Alicante, Spain, and all parties agreed to jointly promote the construction of underwater hydrogen pipelines.

French President Macron said that there will be two main routes, one from Celorico, Portugal to Zamora, Spain, and the other from Barcelona, Spain to Marseille, France, connecting France, Spain and Portugal, and can deliver hydrogen energy to more countries.

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez said that this will be the first important hydrogen energy transportation project in the EU, which is expected to meet 10% of the EU's demand for hydrogen energy, equivalent to 2 million tons per year. While connecting Spain, Portugal and France, the pipeline can provide hydrogen energy to more European countries. The total length of the pipeline is about 455 kilometers. It is expected to be completed in 2030, with a total cost of about 2.5 billion euros, about 18 billion yuan, half of which will be borne by the EU, and the other half will be completed by national energy companies and private investment in France, Spain and Portugal.

When the project was first proposed two months ago, it was planned to be used in part to transport natural gas to make up for the EU's reduction in imports from Russia, but the latest statement emphasized that it will only be used to transport green hydrogen energy.
